What does Christmas point to

It is Christmas! Everyone is getting ready to celebrate the big day. Some have planned vacations while others have come up with special arrangements to spice up the occasion. When you look around the world, you see all the glamour and decorations for this specific day. People are ready to celebrate!

But why do we celebrate Christmas? Is it because everyone is up for it? Is it for fun? This is a question that every believer needs to answer. Before the fun and the celebrations there needs to be a foundation. That is, Christ came to save mankind from Sin, death and Satan’s control.

When we have this perspective, then there shall be value in every activity that we carry out. The activities will be informed by the main reason for the occasion. This means that we shall not just celebrate but celebrate right. By this, I mean that there shall be no activity that will not reflect what Christ came to do. There shall be no participation in darkness while celebrating the light of the World.

Matthew 1:21 ESV says  “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Combining this with John 3:16, you can see the ultimate purpose for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christmas, therefore, is not Christ being born again, but a reminder of why Christ came. This should be fresh in our minds every day throughout the year.

This truth is integral in our lives. Let’s embrace it and run with it.

Merry Christmas!
