How God provides in unique ways

Have you ever been in a situation where you have a very little left, yet you have to give it out and trust God for a miracle?

Well, there was a drought in the land of Israel for three and a half years. It was so bad that the prophet Elijah was starving. The Lord commanded a widow in Zarephath to feed him. Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you. 1 Kings 17:9 (ESV)

When Elijah approached the woman to give him food, she only had her last flour and some oil to make bread, eat with her son, and then starve to death. She could have wondered why the prophet went to her for food and not any other person who maybe had more to offer. She however chooses to make some bread for the prophet Elijah first regardless of the situation. And this was God’s promise; she would never run out of bread for she fed the man of God. The promise was true, and the lady never lacked.

Don’t worry,” Elijah said to her. “Go on and prepare your meal. But first, make a small loaf from what you have and bring it to me, and then prepare the rest for you and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The bowl will not run out of flour or the jar run out of oil before the day that I, the Lord, send rain. The widow went and did as Elijah had told her, and all of them had enough food for many days. As the Lord had promised through Elijah, the bowl did not run out of flour nor did the jar run out of oil. 1 Kings 17:13-16 (GNT)

Reflection:

  • What are you doing concerning the needy people around you?
  • What is the state of your heart in matters giving?
  • Do you feel that you will lack when you give?

Lesson

This lady decided to obey the words of Prophet Elijah without knowing what would happen to her and her son after that. Do you have such a kind of faith? do you believe that what God says in His word is true? Jeremiah 1:12 reminds us that God is watching over His word to perform it. Our part is just to trust and believe in Him.

Prayer

Father thank you for reminding us that you are our sufficiency. Forgive us for looking elsewhere for the provision and not fully relying on you. Help us to remember that you own everything in the world, and we are just but stewards. Keep our eyes open to the needs around us and cause us not to withhold what you have blessed us with but to share with the needy around us. Amen
